46. Plateaus

For the last 2 weeks now I can safely say my body has hit a plateau. That point where you have a hard stop in your progress. The training is not too bad and the progression is going well, but the weight loss has stopped dead. It's frustrating that as I train harder each week, and keep my calories at sensible low levels (roughly 1800-2000 a day) my weight has stayed pretty much the same since Easter 2.5 weeks ago. I've stripped out carbs. Kept good fats in and eating very clean. But the body is just holding on right now. I know I'm pretty well fat adapted, but weight is not coming off in a linear process. It's not simply about calories in vs calories burned. If it was I'd be steadily losing the weight.

Possibilities to consider:

  1. I need to eat less

  2. I need to move even more

  3. I'm not drinking enough water

  4. I've hit my body's weight 'set point'

1 & 2 are not the problem. I train regularly, though I can throw in a 24hr fasting day. I am also adding in some cross training this week and next week on top of my regular progression training to push more. I'll also throw in some more walking to help push the edge further. I just need to go carefully as my achilles/peroneal tendons are less than happy with me at the moment and the tendonitis is flaring up

3 & 4 are the likely culprits so I'll be raising the water intake as I think I'm dehydrated still (most people are) in general, and water is really important to weight loss. I'm going to up the ante and drink waaay more the next week and see what happens. The4 set point is an interesting one. I've not been under 98kg since I was fighting competitively in my late teens and early 20s. My body has established itself at the 100kg-110kg mark and is in unknown territory. It has held this set point for decades. This means resetting it. My approach is the above and mixing the added effort, variability in training, the fasting, and the water will be a change up to shock the body out of homeostasis and its own weight habit. Let's see what happens.
